Jack and Thelma Urfer
donate $1 million for park |
The
Sarasota community and Sarasota County Parks and Recreation
received the ultimate stocking stuffer Wednesday morning – $1
million. Jack and Thelma Urfer, owners of Southpointe Motors on
Clark Road, presented a check to the Sarasota County Commission
during its meeting at the Sarasota County Administration Center.
The board voted to re-name the park at 6100 Honore Ave. the
Urfer Family Park. The park, previously named Honore Trail Park,
encompasses more than 50 acres at the intersection of Honore
Avenue and Bee Ridge Road. Purchased by the county in 2002 for
$6 million, the park is in the first stage of capital
improvements. Urfer Family Park will have a playground, walking
trails, a picnic area and lots of family oriented programs. The
park is also home to the historic Wilson House, which was moved
to the site in 2004.
“This park will cater to families, preserve a piece of
Sarasota’s heritage and provide a great recreational resource in
the middle of an urban area,” said John McCarthy, general
manager of Sarasota County Parks and Recreation. “This donation
indicates how much our community cares about its parks.”
The Urfers presented the donation to the board as a gift-wrapped
oversized check, which board chair Shannon Stuab and
commissioner Nora Patterson unwrapped.
