Wireless Public Internet Access


Overview

Sarasota County Government is pleased to offer free wireless Internet access to downtown Sarasota, using appropriately equipped wireless devices. This network supports 802.11b and 802.11g Wi-Fi devices for Internet browsing.

Offerings

This service offers a new way for citizens and visitors in Sarasota to use their own equipment for mobile Internet services.

Limitations

  • Security - This network is open to the public and can be viewed by others. It is recommended that you use personal firewall and anti-virus software while connected to an un-trusted network. Sarasota County Government, Unplugged or anyone associated with this service are not responsible for any loss incurred on this service. the safety of your data or equipment cannot be secured by Sarasota County Government, Unplugged or anyone associated with this service.
  • Signal and Speed - The signal may vary from one location to another and the speed will vary based on the type of wireless equipment used. Large numbers of users can reduce the overall speed of this network.
  • Service - This service may be discontinued or modified at any time and is subject to additional laws, rules and regulations.
  • Support - This is a free service offered to individuals using their own equipment. Neither 82 Degrees Tech nor Sarasota County staff are able to provide technical support for any private equipment.


Requirements

  • A wireless notebook computer, personnel desk assistant (PDA), or other device with an 802.11b or 802.11g compliant card is needed to use the service. Cards or drivers not supporting these standards may or may not work properly.
  • This service will automatically assign you an IP address, depending on the configuration fo your device.


Tips

  • Make sure that your wireless card is enabled.
  • Unplugged is an unsecured system, so you must allow open access to use the service.
  • Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your wireless card.
  • Make sure that your wireless card supports 802.11b or 802.11g standards.
  • If you have a static IP address for your wireless card, change the address to Dynamic.
